BRIX

Wiki definition.

  • Who developed the BRIX scale? See here

The pic above is  a dual BRIX/Specific Gravity wort Graduation scale. Most BRIX meters  are only the BRIX scale (0-32 degrees of refraction).

Specific Gravity (SG) has many uses from ensuring the right oil density for vintage cars to wine densities.

No, of course not....NB in the BRIX definition:

"For example, when one adds equal amounts of salt and sugar to equal amounts of water, the degrees Brix of the salt solution rises faster than the sugar solution, because it is denser"*.

* This is what I added to Wiki in 2018, as they had been steadfastly refusing to acknowledge that BRIX measures all dissolved solids (nutrients) in liquids, juices, sap, etc.

Until then, Wiki  insisted that BRIX was a measure of sugars only, despite the many scientific papers presented to them.

Nutrient density (via the  BRIX scale) has been regarded  as the best, most objective measure of produce, food and beverage (incl. coffee) quality for past 200 years by global health Authorities and Food Scientists .

Our National Health  and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)  to calculate one's RDI (Recommended Nutrient Intake, replacing RDI in 2005) for balanced eating - easily calculated using IT / mobile IT these days).

And is used by FSANZ to measure the 56 'essential' nutrients at the 'average' of BRIX ratings for RNI calculations.
