Explanation of BRIX Readings and Ratings.

The use of BRIX Readings and Ratings

Since 2010, when we first  used the BRIX meter, which our store Customers insisted on calling a NutriMeter, we have sold 10  evolutions of the NutriMeter.

The above was the 6th, the Nutrimeter VI, an enhancement of the SCiO scanner / spectrometer which we used in the field and the store since 2017.

SCiO used the Dr. Carey Reams' BRIX Readings and Rating Chart as indicated above.

You can find (and print out) more info on this Chart  here.

Explanation of NDI (Nutrient Density Indices)

Education: Understanding Nutrient Density

Education: Understanding Nutrient Density

Education: Understanding Nutrient Density

Food is more than colour and shape — it has an inside story.

That story is made of nutrients, minerals, plant compounds, dry matter, and structural qualities that vary enormously between different pieces of produce.

NutriBalance* is committed to helping communities understand these differences in a simple, safe, science-based, non-political way.

* Nutribalance Systems is the overall umbrella covering:

  • Soil Heatlh
  • Produce and Food Health

and

  • Human Health

We use metrics to manage, plan and/or control all 3, connecting all directly in straight forward way.

Why Nutrient Levels Vary in Fresh Produce

Education: Understanding Nutrient Density

Education: Understanding Nutrient Density

The nutrients in fruits and vegetables naturally vary because of:

  • Soil quality
  • Weather And growing conditions
  • Farming methods
  • Storage time
  • Handling, Transport
  • Variety/cultivar differences
  • Harvest timing

This variation is recognised by food science bodies worldwide (FSANZ, WHO, USDA, FAO, etc.).
Because nutrient content varies so much, official nutrient reference values are based on population averages, not specific pieces of produce.  This means: two carrots from different farms can have very different nutritional characteristics.

What Is Nutrient Density?

Education: Understanding Nutrient Density

What Is Nutrient Density?

Nutrient density refers to the concentration of nutrient-related properties inside a food.
These properties include:

  • Dry matter
  • Soluble solids
  • Cell structure
  • Protein-related scattering
  • Mineral-associated features
  • Water-to-solid ratio

Foods with higher density often taste better, store longer, and have firmer texture — because they contain more solids and structure.

Nutrient density is not about calories or size.

It is about what’s inside.

What Is NDI?

The NutriMeter Nx

What Is Nutrient Density?

The Nutrient Density Index (NDI) is a simple number from 1 to 100 indicating certain internal characteristics of produce measured using safe near-infrared light at ~880 nm.  NDI does not directly measure vitamins or minerals.
It measures reflectance patterns that correlate with food quality and density.  You can think of NDI as:  “A quick snapshot of how solid, dense, and well-developed the produce is on the inside.”  It’s a practical comparison tool — not a medical device. Running a holiday sale or weekly special? Definitely promote it here to get customers excited about getting a sweet deal.

Why Use NDI?

The NutriMeter Nx

The NutriMeter Nx

 NDI helps:

✔ Consumers  Compare produce quickly and easily.

✔ Families  Learn how food quality varies between shops and seasons.  ✔ Growers  Track improvements in soil, plant health, and harvest timing.

✔ Schools  Teach kids how food works — and why quality matters.  ✔ Markets & Communities  Build trust and transparency.

✔ Nutrition Education  Support better understanding of real-world variation.

NDI is not a health claim — it is simply a measurement to help people see differences that are normally invisible.  it to yourself, let folks know.

The NutriMeter Nx

The NutriMeter Nx

The NutriMeter Nx

NutriMeter uses a brief, low-intensity NIR pulse to assess produce characteristics.

The reading appears immediately on the 0.49" OLED screen.  It is:

  • Non-destructive
  • Fast
  • Simple
  • Portable
  • Easy for anyone to use

No apps or subscriptions are required for Nx-01.

Explanation of NDI (Nutrient Density Indices)

The NDI Quality / Rating Scale

The NDI Quality / Rating Scale

The NDI Quality / Rating Scale

As there is a high correlation between BRIX (0-32) and NDI (0-100) readings, we can use the Dr. Carey Reams' Rating chart with confidence.

Developed over 80 years ago from research all around the USA, every produce item has its own grading or rating of "poor", "average", "good" or "Excellent". - see here for more info  at the back of this page here.

And has been used as a Rating method or scale since then.

This Rating is a comparison tool, not a health rating.

Advantages of NDI over BRIX.

How does NDI / BRIX affect your RNI?

This refers to the amount of nutrients in an item of produce or food. The higher the density level, the greater the amount of nutrients, the more nutritious, delicious!

Why is it important?

One needs to balance your Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) f you want to feel better and live longer.

Cheaper quality is not always better-see VMI

  • on the right, if using the Web
  • above if on mobile.

Who uses it?

Farmers, growers have been using BRIX meters for the past 80 years to improve their soil by monitoring the quality of their output - produce, cereals, grasses, etc,

Consumers have been using spectro's to scan (2-3 secs), without touching, and compare for the most delicious, nutritious produce before they have to pay for them.

When can they be used?

At any temperature. BRIX meters / NutriMeter I (Ni)s refractometers have  ATC (Automatic Temperature Control) to adjust measures, readings and ratings to  20 degrees C, the BRIX standard.

Spectro's - With our Nutrimeter X (Nx), this is to be tested, comparing the same produce at 0 and 40 degrees C.

The focus of our testing since 2023 has been to ensure that our digital output (NDI = Nutreint density Indicator) is consistent in comparing the relative nutrient densities measured by refracto's and other spectro's - so far our Nx has been 100% reliable.

We believe that that we can get close to 100% correlation with BRIX measures, providing a Mobile app in the next generation of Nx's to provide BRIX readings and ratings for some 450 varieties of produce available in ANZ.

Where are they used?

Just about anywhere, but not underwater, obviously.

How are they used?

Refracto's require juice / sap extraction. Time consuming and messy, cannot be done in a shop. But very accurate.

In 3-4 secs, spectro's scan and display NDI's whilst walking down food aisles.    See pics below (downloadable)
