Why use tomatoes as a benchmark?

Simply, because most people eat tomatoes, because everyone knows the difference in taste and flavour between store-bought tomatoes,  but few know the nutrient differences.

Also, in the produce testing world, the tomato makes for excellent benchmarking, due to the easily detectable variations in BRIX and NDI  from 'ripeness' to vatiety.

Why tomatoes come last in every taste Test!

The tomato 'taste and "food value For money"(VMI) story!

Most people know the difference, but here is how we measure.

Below was based on the data of the BRIX values for tomatoes collected from 2010 to 2022, In 2023, things changed dramatically with the advent of New Breeding Techniques (similar to GMO  )

1st or 3 VIP Factors influencing Taste and food Value : Soil

What is the Best Soil for Tomatoes?

Crops and plants have different nutrient / input requirements.

So, understand what your plant needs first, then prepare your soil appropriately. There are a number of low cost tools or services to help you here, which NutriBalance Systems (not up yet) can provide.

We recommend natural, chem-free ways of enriching soil such as composts.  worm juice  or similar. And ensure you buy GMO-free seed!

Worms are your best "forever" fertiliser - just keep feeding them.

2nd VIP Factor : Ripeness

Are you finding produce tasting sweeter than before?

Probably, as from Jan, 2026, we can now buy GMO Tomatoes legally and soon many more produce items. You have been able to buy NBT  (New Breeding Techniques - similar to GMO) modified produce in order to circumvent Australian anti-GMO laws (in effect until Dec., 2025).

So, if you wish to avoid the long-term effects of a double whammy of:

  • Sugar / fructose laden produce, and
  • GMO / NBT

then there are 2 Nx models which measures both nutrient density and sugar content levels in one read:

  • NxC - Consumer grade, designed for Customers to, fast and easily,  pick the best from what is on front of them in 4-5 auto-scans:
  • NxL - Lab grade, a 12 sec scan for more accurate readings for greater integrity, useful for Farmers and Research purposes.

Both do the same functions of readings :

  • Nutrient Density Indices (NDI)*,
  • Sugar Content Indices (SCI), and
  • SCI / NDI Ratios', so that one can identify / compare artificially sugar laden produce  with natural produce.

 * which we are currently correlating with BRIX readings for 450 varieties of produce in ANZ, which we have collected since 2010, correlations, so you can assess whether produce is rated "poor', 'average', 'good' or 'excellent' before you have to pay for it, and sugar comparisons against natural, unmodified produce. If you are interested in helping us, join a local workshop. (very educational).
